When John and Ella arriving back home around midnight, they discovered the house lit up like a Christmas tree. This seemed most unusual. On entering the house, they wandered through their silent home with trepidation. John heard a noise coming from the parlour, and they quickly made their way to the room only to find Gwennie looking dishevelled, sitting on the sofa in an apparent state of shock, and rocking back and forth. She kept uttering the words, “No! No!” to herself, not comprehending that they were there.

Ella immediately panicked and started to scream at her, “Gwennie, what’s happened?”

The more she screamed, the more her daughter sat there staring wildly into space. Her husband tried to calm her down, but she knew someone had hurt her daughter.

“Gwennie, who’s been here?” she screamed, her mind flooded with all types of terrible images.

Finally, she slapped her daughter’s face in an effort to make her speak and explain matters. All Gwennie did was to sit there blankly in silence rocking slowly, with tears streaking down her face.

While Ella was in still in her state of panic, John went searching through the house, trying to find out who had been here. Tetabo and his family were not in their little room out the back. They had gone down to the village to spend the night with their relatives because they knew the family would be absent for the evening.

John raced back into the parlour and sat down next to Gwennie, putting his arms around her. He rocked her gently in his arms, speaking softly. “Who hurt my little girl? It’s all right Gwennie, your daddy is here!” he cooed while she cuddled into his arms.

John’s paternal manner completely took Ella by surprise, and now she too sank down on the sofa next to them.

Poor little Uma did not know what was going on when Ella began to weep uncontrollably. They all sat there on the sofa, sharing Gwennie’s pain. All Gwennie could manage to say coherently that night was something about the window. She kept pointing to it and crying, too overwrought to continue. John and Ella had gathered that someone had come through the window.

John tried to soothe her sufficiently enough to call in Methven, the officer in charge of the island’s police. He also wanted to speak to Douglas, the man he had arranged to accompany Gwennie home.

Ella could see the anger in his eyes, but every time he tried to leave her, Gwennie would become hysterical and cling to him.

After Ella had calmed down enough to put poor little Uma to bed, she returned to the parlour, and that was where the three of them stayed. Still dressed in their costumes, they made a strange sight as John held his daughter in his arms while Gwennie drifted in and out of fitful sleep.

Next morning just after dawn, Tetabo came in with his usual morning’s catch to find them still huddled together on the sofa. He got such a shock to see them that he immediately rushed over to wake them up and find out what was wrong.
